New Nintendo 2DS XL: The Same And Better
The 2DS XL is actually a 3DS XL without 3D and with a slightly improved design. It opens the doors of a very well stocked toy library composed
Although it does not bring anything new, the Nintendo 2DS XL offers a fantastic gaming experience in nomad mode for a very affordable price.
Despite the phenomenal success of its Switch that bridges the gap between home and mobile consoles, Nintendo has not given up on evolving its portable consoles. The New 2DS XL (since it’s its official full name) is the latest version and in many ways the best portable Nintendo ever released. It retains the dual wide screen of the New 3DS XL (still available) but loses the 3D effect that is almost not (more) used by most games.
The new 2DS XL sports a slightly retouched design inherited from the New 3DS XL.With its new design, the plethoric game catalog (almost all 3DS and DS games) in cartridge or download and its very affordable price, the 2DS XL has it all.
But, like the PlayStation 4 Slim and the Xbox One S , it is above all a new packaging for an existing product at a more attractive price. We can say that it is a New 3DS XL at a broken price rather than a real novelty. No need to rush if you already have a Nintendo of previous generations.
The 2DS XL is moving away from the dual-display design of the first 2DS of the name to adopt the foldable dual-screen format by improving ergonomics over previous models.
The dimensions are almost identical to those of the 3DS XL (160 x 86 x 20 mm in closed position) with a 4.9-inch top screen and a 4.2-inch lower touch screen. But the 2SD XL is lighter: 238 grams against 328 grams for the New 3DS XL.
The console is available in black and turquoise or white and orange finish. Our only complaint concerns the stylus. Why the hell is it so short while the console is bigger? Compared to that of the 3DS it is only slightly smaller, but it makes a difference to use, especially for adult hands.
To The Happiness of The Players
Turn on the console and dive into a rich ecosystem of years of existence that will delight fans. Whether on cartridges or via the eShop online store, we find the best titles such as P okemon Sun and Moon , Super Smash Bros. , Mario Kart 7 , Zelda; Ocarina of Time , Majora’s Mask and A Link Between Worlds at even more affordable prices.
Owners of a current DS will find nothing more. On the other hand, those who do not yet have a portable console or a first-generation DS can go there with their eyes closed. Also note that the 2DS XL can run games in the SNES Virtual Console.
Unfortunately, there are also some points of frustration that Nintendo has not solved. For example, transferring a game from one 2DS / 3DS console to another is always a hassle.
You’ll notice as quickly as the 2DS XL screens are brilliant and subject to glare under direct light. The disappearance of the 3D mode is not a big loss since this option was more of the gadget order little or not used.
Apart from that, we find all the features of the 3DS XL with some improvements. For example, the microSD memory card reader (a 4GB card is included) is located right next to the cartridge drive, which eliminates the need to remove the battery. Another good news is that the AC adapter is delivered as standard. Too bad that Nintendo did not go a little further by adopting the USB-C as the Switch.
Nintendo does not communicate about the autonomy of the New 2DS XL and we expected figures equivalent to those of the New 3DS XL that vary from 3.5 to 7 hours depending on the type of game. But playing Professor Layton , we reached 8 hours. On the other hand, on Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask , the battery was emptied in less than 4 hours. The Eurogamer site got the same result with Mario Kart 7 with all the settings pushed to the maximum. In standby, the console can last several days, but a daily charge is obviously ideal.
On the side of the interface, we find the buttons and controls of the 3DS and an NFC chip to interact with Amiibo characters, Wi-Fi, a parental control mode and front and rear cameras.
Yes, the new Nintendo Switch is an excellent console that offers a nomadic mode. But the 2DS XL offers a much richer library, it fits in the pocket, has a marathoner autonomy and costs much less. Basically, Nintendo offers us the same performance as the 3DS XL for a lower price and improved design. No need to procrastinate, you can go with your eyes closed.
