Samsung U28E590D (28 inch) 4K UHD Monitor
Years ago, UHD screens were an almost priceless sin for PC users. Gradually, the market has become saturated and more and more manufacturers now offer the resolution of 3840 x 2160, even in smaller screen sizes, away from costly 32-inch machines. The Samsung U28E590D * belongs to this new kind and tries to offer gamer in particular a favorable and qualitatively high-quality representation of contents.
Quite pleasing for new buyers: Samsung sets right next to the monitor and stand suitable connection cable for HDMI and DisplayPort. In addition, there is the power cord with external power supply. A driver CD with various software tools, a small manual and warranty cards for complaints or repairs complete the accessories. There is nothing essential missing. The monitor is ready for immediate use.
Equipment And Design
The design style of the Samsung U28E590D is visually appealing and modern without placing too much emphasis on unusual design elements. However, the piano paint of the black screen frame often degenerates into a delicate question of taste for many users. According to other tests, the monitor can be tilted by 22 degrees (-2 / + 20). Unfortunately, the device does not offer more setting options. A 28-inch display (16: 9 format) sits on the obligatory T-stand, which has already celebrated a rendezvous at many Samsung productions. This is also known for its susceptibility to shaking in light bumps against the desk. Also typical for the manufacturer is the small joystick on the back for navigation through the OSD. Due to the omitted controls, the front view looks very clean and tidy.
On the back are all relevant connections: 2x HDMI and 1x DisplayPort 1.2 are used to connect players or graphics cards. On future viability was thought: One of the two HDMI ports belongs to the new 2.0 generation and supports HDCP 2.2. Matching UHD content can therefore be enjoyed without any handle to the DisplayPort cable via HDMI in 60 full frames. In the immediate vicinity fristet still a 3.5mm jack output for headphones its existence. According to Samsung, the device needs about 38 watts during normal use. By the way, be careful when buying: The confusingly similar looking Samsung U28D590D * has no VESA support and only HDMI 1.4 in the luggage. UHD playback would be possible with the old model only in a maximum of 30 Hz.
Image Quality And Technology
Samsung throws two functions into the balance against the early fatigue of the eyesight: Flicker Free guarantees that there is no flicker in the brightness control of the LED backlight. Some devices use pulse width modulation (PWM) in the low frequency range, which can lead to this stressful phenomenon. At the same time, the eye-saver mode reduces the blue light portion of the display and thus spares the eyes in the long term.
The screen itself uses the old-established twisted nematic technology. There are therefore no excessively large tolerances at unfavorable angles. Color distortions and declining contrast are the result when viewed from the side. But for gamers, the associated response time of just 1 ms (GTG) should be extremely convenient. Together with an almost exaggerated luminosity of 370 cd / m², this guarantees a razor sharp and quite homogeneous image in UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) and 28 inches even with fast movements in almost any ambient lighting. Contrasts and above all colors can consistently convince with this model, which was highlighted in various test reports. The reason: The TN panel uses a true 10-bit color table to represent up to a billion different shades.
Samsung has even more in store : The Samsung U28E590D is a member of the exclusive club of Free-Sync screens. Any AMD graphics card owner with this technology can resort to dynamic regulation of the screen frequency based on the actual output rate of the GPU. This brings sleek image sequences without tearing, yet eliminates the much-feared VSync stuttering at the same time. Without LFR (low framerate compensation) support, this feature only covers a range of 40-60 Hz. In addition, use of the feature requires connection via the DisplayPort 1.2. Also useful is the PBP and PIP feature for friends of multitasking. Thus, several input signals arrive simultaneously on the screen and can be easily organized by means of software from the driver CD.
Not only for the gaming community is the Samsung U28E590D a very interesting offer. Even normal users get a very practical device with very good picture quality. Users who depend on color fastness, the fixed monitor and narrower viewing angles of TN technology thwart the bill. Most users benefit from a modern Radeon graphics card. Some online retailers undercut the RRP of 549 € clearly and require just under 350 euros (as of Oct. 2016) for the excellent gamer display. The only condition: The basic performance of the PC must be able to cope with such high resolutions in games. Otherwise, only Full-HD would remain as an alternative option, in order to avoid unsightly sharpness losses through interpolation.
