Sonos Beam : TV Sound Bar With Alexa
Sonos has introduced its second smart speaker. The new model is called Beam, it is held in the form of a soundbar and can be operated via Alexa with the language.
After the one comes Beam. Sonos’ second smart speaker is different from the One, which is designed especially for the pure enjoyment of music. The Soundbar sonos Beam should also be used when watching movies or TV shows, with a better soundscape than with the built-in speakers built in the TV is promised. Sonos beam can be combined with other speakers of the provider to a music system through the Sonos Multiroom features.
Bottom of FormBeam is a mix of the Playbar and Playbase that Sonos has on offer. Playbar and Playbase are designed for larger spaces, the beam for smaller spaces. Measuring 65.1 x 10 x 6.85 cm, Beam is smaller than the Playbase and will probably not achieve such a powerful sound because it simply lacks volume. Nevertheless, Sonos beam promises a wide sound picture for a loudspeaker of this size. For this purpose, four self-made fullrange woofers and three passive radiators and a tweeter were installed. Together this should bring deep, warm bass and easy-to-understand dialogues.
The sonos beam has only one entrance like the Playbase. For the Playbase this is an optical input, for Beam an HDMI input. An optical audio adapter is also included, so that the sound from the TV can also be transmitted via an optical cable to the speaker. Older televisions do not necessarily support the HDMI standard ARC Sonos uses. So there’s no problem, Sonos adds an ARC-compatible HDMI cable.
Beam has five far-field microphones and works with Amazon’s digital assistant. In addition, the Sonos speaker can be operated with the language. If the TV is connected via HDMI, it can be switched on or off on demand. All the usual Alexa features are available on the beam. Comfort functions such as calls and messages between Alexa devices are thus not possible, which are currently reserved for Amazon’s own echo devices. Even changing the signal word is only available to the echo speakers. Sonos also wants to bring the Google Assistant to his speakers this year, but there are no new details.
Beam is integrated into the domestic network either via a network cable or via WLAN. As with other Sonos speakers, all common music streaming services can be used with them. However, only for Amazon Music and Spotify a complete voice control is available. Bluetooth sound is not provided by the Sonos speakers.
Sonos beam will be offering the second-generation Speakers One, Playbase, Play 5 and Beam Airplay 2 support. Music can be played by an iOS device, and Siri can also be used on an iPhone or iPad to control music playback via voice. Unlike Alexa, the user has to use a matching iOS device.
Sonos’ Playbase and compared it to the quite similar Raumfeld Sounddeck. Both greatly enhance the domestic TV sound. Not only in the bass range, the two systems give the sound a strong foundation, and overall the sound is wider and more space filling.
The Playbase provides for a more balanced sound: Thanks to the better frequency separation, audio signals appear clearer in direct comparison with the sound deck. The first Playbase was only provided with a connection, we find too little and prevented a buy recommendation.
