The most stylish and functional design, excellent keyboard, clear and bright screen, a correct stylus and a sound rather good for a tablet

If you’re looking for an attractive, high-performance 2-in-1 tablet for video streaming, office automation, and stylus design, and you’re willing to stay on the go, the new HP spectre x2 is a good choice candidate.

Compared to Microsoft’s Surface Pro , the HP spectre x2 hybrid tablet version 2017 has some serious arguments to make: a very good keyboard, a high-performance stylus, a 12.3-inch display with a higher density of 3.000×2. 000 pixels, a more competitive price with equal configurations.

What to look for, at least for those who do not have big needs in the creative field and do not seek performance or autonomy. The spectre x2 is available in two configurations: Intel Core i5-7260U, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD and Core i7-7560U, 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of SSD. This second version is in our opinion the most interesting for better performance.

A Superb Screen, A Pro Keyboard

Knowing that most detachable keyboard hybrid tablets are often very difficult to use on the legs, we were pleasantly surprised by this model. We can safely type on this keyboard that remains stable and offers a great return. The keys are judiciously arranged, which will delight the expert typists. The backlight is convenient for working in the dark and can be turned off.

The touchpad is relatively spacious and has never bothered us. Bravo! The screen is also excellent for working. It is not very big, but its density (293 pixels per inch against 267 dpi for the Surface Pro) makes it very comfortable and clean. It is also very bright when plugged on mains (450 nits). You can also disable the backlight control to gain brightness when working on battery (415 nits).

On the other hand, do not expect too much from the side of color fidelity and tonal range. The screen only covers 93% of the RGB range, which remains acceptable for common use. Moreover, he is quite greedy in energy. With 5.8 hours of autonomy, the spectre is far from rivals and probably will not take a day. Plus, the fast charging system via USB-C that restores 50% of the battery in 30 minutes?

Optimized For The Stylus

The same display ratio as the Surface Pro is much more comfortable to work than the 16: 9. On the other hand, this implies that the videos are framed by borders, but the higher resolution compensates and offers a very clear rendering for the HD videos.

The new kickstand offers good firmness with a tilt up to 165 degrees to work with the stylus. About the latter, it offers a slight rubbery resistance that we personally appreciated. The Active Pen is comfortable and supports 1,024 levels of pressure. Even if you do not draw, it allows to have a very natural writing. But despite its qualities, it does not live up to the performance of the Microsoft stylus which displays a latency of 21 milliseconds and 4,096 levels of pressure against 35 ms and 1,024.

The audio portion rises above the pack for a tablet with a pair of loudspeakers optimized by Bang & Olufsen.

For the rest, here are 3 elements to have in mind:

  1. The spectre x2 incorporates two USB-C ports for charging and connecting an external device. Be aware that the transfer rate is limited to 5 Gbit / s.
  2. It is equipped with two fans, like its predecessor, but are quite discreet.
  3. The infrared camera that was located at the back to act as a sensor was moved to the front for use with the Windows Hello biometric authentication system.

The Spectrum x2 has the assets to land as a featherweight alternative to a laptop to accomplish basic tasks and entertainment, all for a reasonable price. Provided you do not need a day of autonomy
